I'm Catholic, and I've always been taught that the Father, Son, and The Holy Spirit are all one entity. I think people depict The Holy Spirit as a dove because it is God's spirit kind of working through us, I think it is hard to depict it in general because it looks different in every person. I'm a firm believer in finding God's will in the mundane, just like how Jesus came in humbly, I think The Holy Spirit works in ways that are sometimes not always obvious.

Back to your question,

Where I was raised, I wasn't ever really told depicting God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit is necessarily "wrong" I just think maybe the negativity stems from the art obviously not actually being a representation of God etc. God is not a bearded guy floating in a cloud, but rather I like to believe he is the love and goodness in the universe, and it is simply impossible to see that tapestry in its entirety. I don't think its like spiritually "illegal" to depict God or The Holy spirit, and honestly God made the artists who made that art, so I suppose its our simple brains trying to depict him in our own special way.

I think it is easy to get lost in semantics regarding the bible, but I always like to remember that Jesus said "above all these is love". I think as long as this is our goal, we are on the path to righteousness.
